Lot Essay

In 1931, during the invasion of Manchuria, the arts community in Guangzhou held a National Crisis Fundraiser to aid in the resistence against the enemy. This work was created for this particular occasion, with the "National Crisis Assembly" seal on the bottom left corner. Although painted by several artists, Zhao's butterflies act as the main focal point for the painting.
