ZHANG YUGUANG (1886-1968)
LOTS 3196-3198 FROM THE MAO FAMILY COLLECTION The receiver of these paintings, Mao Ching Hsiang, was born in Chikou, Zhejiang province. Graduating with a Masters degree in Chemical Agriculture Engineering in France in 1925, he held important posts for the National Government of the Republic of China from 1930-1949. Mao worked for President Chiang Kai-shek as Secretary General and as Head of the Department of Secret Affairs. He received the Medal of Freedom from President Harry Truman in 1946. During Mao's wedding with Cheu Sanyin in 1937, Yu Youren, a good friend of them both, gifted the happy couple with a calligraphic couplet on red paper (lot 3196), as seen in the photo. Yu was also the bride's witness for the wedding at Shanghai's New Asian Hotel, while the groom's witness was General Ho Yingchen, standing to the right of Yu Youren. Yu also gifted the couple with many other of his calligraphic works, as a testament of their long and lasting friendship.
