Lot Essay

Jongkind's first tutor, Andreas Schelfhout, a renowned Dutch Romantic painter, had a profound impact on the artist's early work. Characterised by the meticulous execution and detailing of the Romantic tradition, the present lot is a wonderful example of work from this period which would serve as a solid foundation for his artistic development into one of the precursors of the Impressionist movement.

We would like to thank the Comité Jongkind Paris - La Haye for authenticating the present lot. This work will be included in their forthcoming Catalogue critique currently in preparation.
