Formerly in the collection of Kathleen and Hubert Jetzer, acquired in Mumbai circa 1946-48
Thence by descent
Hubert Jetzer was employed by the Swiss company, Volkart Brothers, in India between 1945-1959. The company was founded in 1851 in Winterthur, Switzerland, by Salomon and J.G. Volkart in order to establish direct commercial relations between India and Europe, initially focusing on the import of raw cotton to Switzerland enabling a high quality local textile business and export of manufactured goods to India. Raza was commissioned to paint watercolours of South India to be reproduced in a calendar of the Volkart Brothers. Employees of the company were subsequently able to acquire the original watercolours.
