Lot Essay

A study for the figure of David on his horse in a drawing in red chalk, pen and brown ink and bodycolour, representing Abigail at the feet of David in the Louvre (inv. 27436; C. Gustin-Gomez, Charles de La Fosse 1636-1716. Catalogue raisonné, Dijon, 2006, vol. II, no. D.93). La Fosse exhibited a picture now lost of that subject at the Salon of 1699, which was probably based on the composition of the Louvre drawing.

We are grateful to Clémentine Gustin-Gomez who has confirmed the attribution of this drawing after examination of the original.
