Lot Essay

"The work of Swiss artist Jean-Frdric Schnyder comprises a set of atypical associations, styles and methodologies. Its distinction is that it combines the look of Folk Art with the conceptual rigour of Minimalism, and encompasses stylistic influences from Pop and Realism to Abstraction.
Schnyder uncovers an invented collective memory lodged in the excesses of kitsch and banality. In the process of cataloguing his environment, from family and dogs to physical surroundings, he has developed a descriptive idiom, whose sly sense of mirth transforms the commonplace, the intractable burden of the day-to-day, into something altogether different and impassioned."
B. Ruf, "Jean-Frédéric Schnyder", 2005.
