Lot Essay

"The idea one gets when looking at the work of John Armleder is the idea of the twentieth century itself, the age of modernity. This is not only because he uses an abstract pictorial vocabulary, but also because he uses objects that have served to construct the new life of this century. It is like saying that this relationship between images and things represents one of the fundamental energies of the history of
modernity and the artist is concerned, voluntarily and involuntarily, with plumbing the depths. It is a relationship between art and life, public and private, the avant-garde and tradition, the elite and the masses, creation and production."
G. di Pietrantonio, "Images, Things and Participation", in Parkett, No. 50/51, 1997, p. 31.
