Lot Essay

"Jamini Roy's extraordinary contribution lay in adapting a modernist folk style to subjects as removed from his everyday experience as biblical themes." (Poetry and Patriotic Fervour: Indian Art Pre-Independence, exhibition catalogue, New Delhi, 2003, p. 42) Inspired by renaissance depictions of the lamentation of Christ, in this painting, Christ is supported by the apostles and Mary Magdalen, after his descent from the cross.
