Lot Essay

In 1972, Rameshwar Broota participated in a workshop with Group-8, an association of artists devoted to printmaking. Group 8 was founded in 1968 by Somnath Hore and Jagmohan Chopra with the aim to increase both the importance and popularity of print-making. Their influence in establishing printmaking as a respected artistic medium is demonstrated by the participation of many prominent artists including M. F. Husain and Paritosh Sen.

The male figure has played a central role throughout Broota's career, becoming a site for conflict and its resolution in the artist's subjects.
