Lot Essay

After the Civil War and at the turn of the 19th century, there was a proliferation in American sculpture used to commemorate and celebrate national heroes and events. Daniel Chester French produced several of America's most significant public sculptures, including the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
