Lot Essay

This photograph and lot 204 were gifts from Kertész to his friend and professional associate, Jacqueline Paouillac. When Kertész left Paris for an intended one-year stay in New York he entrusted his negatives, some prints and other effects to the care of Mme Paouillac. That year quickly turned into decades and the friends lost touch. Finally, when they reconnected in 1963, Kertész allowed Mme Paouillac to keep these prints as a token of his appreciation for safeguarding his negatives.
