For a smaller variant of the same view of the harbour from the Domain by Rodius see the Collection of views predominantly of Sydney, Liverpool, etc. in the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, PX*D 41, no. 23 (Harbour view with road in foreground).

The German-born Charles Rodius was convicted of the theft of an opera glass, a smelling bottle, a handkerchief and a silk bag and transported to Sydney aboard the Sarah in 1829. As a result of his former experience as an architectural draughtsman in Paris, he was assigned to the Department of Public Works where he gave instruction in drawing to the civil and military officers. Although Rodius' seven-year sentence expired in 1836 he was not officially emancipated until July 1841.
