Lot Essay
'I think the majority of painters today avoid the issue of feeling and of soul. I paint with soul and with feeling. I think this is very important for painting and for humankind. You cannot avoid human feelings. You cannot live like a machine. It's a task that takes a lot of my time and a lot of myself. I spend more time in my studio than at home, for a start. I do my utmost to express feeling, both personal and at the same time the feelings of a particular face.' (R. Lauter, 'Studio Discussion with Yan Pei-Ming', in Yan Pei-Ming: The Way of the Dragon, 2005, p. 102).
