Lot Essay

'Painting is my oldest subject, Fashion my newest, and Beauty my youngest. (They say) Art no longer produces Beauty: She produces meaning. But (I say) one cannot paint a picture, or make an image of a woman, and not deal with the concept of beauty.'
(Marlene Dumas as cited in: Sweet nothings, ed. Mariska van den Berg, Marlene Dumas/Galerie Paul Andriesse/Uitgeverij De Balie, Amsterdam 1998, p. 96)

The present lot was exhibited at the exhibition A noir at the Triennale di Milano in 1998, where Dumas explored the concept of Beauty and Femininity by showing works on paper, each representing a different aspect of these concepts, challenging their stereotypical prejudices and assumptions.
