Both lots offered in original wooden cases and glue-striped labels. Lot 41 four slightly damaged capsules. Two badly bin-soiled and one damaged labels. All levels base of neck or better. Lot 42 six slightly damaged capsules. All bin-soiled labels, three badly bin-soiled. Levels: eight base of neck or better, three top and one upper-shoulder
Vintage Report 1970 ****
A highly important vintage in many ways: its fine quality (initially overrated) and its timing proved a jump start to the wine boom which was already hotting up during the dreary 1967, 1968 and 1969 vintages. There was every reason to believe that it was going to be a highly satisfactory vintage, and as important in its way as the 'millenium' vintage three decades later; the weather conditions despite ups and downs, were conducive to greatness: successful flowering, great heat and drought in July followed by an August in which coolness and hot sunny intervals were tempered by rain; then a long, hot, ripening period leading to a large and successful harvest which began in early October.
