Lot Essay

"The U was a reaction to the X. I was trying to make fun of the X in a way. I was using the X regularly in drawings, and I didn't realize that it was being read very narrowly, like simply as a cancellation...The U complemented the X in some way, and it was kind of funny...it seemed sufficiently abstract. It felt like it could slip out of being a letter...The Xs were always very provisional; I could just screw two planks together. They didn't take any skill. I thought if I was going to generate objects from the U, I should borrow some other production strategy, so I decided to have someone else fabricate it. And I found an ad for this company Milgo, in Brooklyn, in an Avalanche magazine from the 1970s" (Wade Guyton as interviewed by Donna De Salvo, exh. cat., Wade Guyton OS, New York, 2012, pp. 204-205).
