Lot Essay

Anish Kapoor creates not only artistic objects, but site-specific aesthetic experiences between viewers and his works. Untitled embodies this practice, accruing new significance when installed in new locations.

Protean in meaning, Untitled is also deliberately ephemeral in that it exists as both concave and projectile. Through the emission of red light, the piece stakes an active presence within space. When confronted with the light, however, viewers discover that the piece is an absence within the wall. Inhabiting the indeterminate space between presence and absence, Untitled becomes fully realized only when activated by the present of the viewer, transcending the notion of sculpture as a finite object.
