Lot Essay

The present lot, depicting 'Landzicht' farm along the river Gein, was painted by Mondriaan during his early naturalistic period. Only the rooftops of the farm are visible beneath the trees which are reflected in the slow-moving river, giving the canvas a feeling of symmetry. Left to the centre a barge is moored and a tiny figure stands along the bank of the river. Mondriaan used this farm several times as the subject in his paintings and watercolours.
