40 Years of Artists Space
Founded in 1972 in Downtown New York, Artists Space has for four decades successfully contributed to changing the institutional and economic landscape for contemporary art, lending support to emerging artists and emerging ideas alike.
Artists Space has been the site of provocative discussion and experimentation within contemporary artistic debate, from the postmodern image (Douglas Crimp's Pictures, 1977) to identity politics (Adrian Piper's It's Just Art, 1981), to institutional critique (Michael Asher's Untitled, 1988) to the AIDS Crisis (Nan Goldin's Witnesses: Against our Vanishing, 1989). Artists Space has introduced a number of artists to a wider public, amongst them Joan Jonas, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Louise Lawler, Laurie Anderson, Barbara Bloom, John Miller, John Baldessari, Jack Smith, Andrea Fraser, Haim Steinbach, Tim Rollins, Lyle Ashton Harris, Ashley Bickerton, Peter Halley, Lari Pittman, Group Material, Stuart Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Laurie Simmons, Anthony McCall, Fred Wilson, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Mike Kelley, Judith Barry, Michael Smith, Robert Longo, and Jenny Holzer.
In 2012, Artists Space, for the first time in its history opened a second venue, alongside its 7000 square foot exhibition venue in SoHo.
Artists Space: Books & Talks in TriBeCa includes a bookstore and a dedicated venue for debate, including year-round programming of lectures, screenings, performances and symposia.
The Artists Space Program Fund:
Unlike any other organization, Artists Space's name continues to be its mission: putting the needs of artists above all else. Artists Space passionately continues to believe that the quality of its work is the true and only measure of its worth. Hence, the most significant ongoing realm of support for Artists Space is artists who recognize most acutely the importance of its programs.
It is with this in mind that in this very rare instance, coinciding with its 40th Anniversary, Artists Space has turned to artists to support its newly established Artists Space Program Fund. The goal is to raise $2.5 million to support its program with an additional $250,000 annually over the next 10 years; directly supporting artists' works, the production thereof, as well as artist's fees.
Artists Space is deeply honored and tremendously grateful to the artists who are supporting our auction effort, the majority of which will be part of the Christie's First Open sale in March 2013.
