Lot Essay

The following dedication is inscribed along the base:
"To Doctor Pedro Chutro/from his American admirers and friends in appreciation of his service, sacrifice and devotion to the/advancement of medical science and in grateful acknowledgement of his generous contribution to American surgery"

Argentinean-born Dr. Pedro Chutro (1880-1937) is one of only a few foreign surgeons to be awarded a distinguished service award by the United States in recognition of his teaching in New York following his service in France during World War I.
