PROVENANT D'UNE IMPORTANTE COLLECTION PRIVÉE AMÉRICAINE Dix-sept noms composent l'ensemble de cette importante collection de la côte ouest des États-Unis, dix-sept artistes incontournables qui ne nécessitent d'autre introduction que d'en faire l'inventaire éloquent : ALECHINSKY, APPEL, BOLTANSKI, CALDER, CESAR, CHARCHOUNE, DUBUFFET, FRANCIS, HANTAÏ, JORN, MILLARES, POLIAKOFF, RIOPELLE, TAPIES, TOBEY, WARHOL et WOLS. Tous témoignent de la richesse créative des années 1950 et 1960 qui prend corps entre Paris et New York. En effet, ces artistes sont tous liés à Paris, ils y sont tous passés pour de plus ou moins longues périodes, y prouvant l'inspiration, des relations ou le soutien nécessaire à leur reconnaissance. Néanmoins, à l'exception du mouvement CoBrA particulièrement bien représenté ici par Appel, Alechinsky et Jorn, les artistes de cette collection ont en commun de n'appartenir à aucun groupe véritable, aucune tendance esthétique autre que celle dont ils ont la pleine paternité. Ce 'Salon des Indépendants' et ainsi en avant la formidable liberté et diversité qui parcourent ces oeuvres. Ces artistes ont su proposer leur lecture de l'histoire de l'art, de Dubuffet, qui, avec Cafetière, Tasse et Sucrier I de 1965, créé sa propre version de la nature morte passée au crible de la folie de son Hourloupe et qui n'est pas sans évoquer l'exercice similaire entrepris quelques années plus tôt par Picasso, au paysage sensible de Riopelle dont Il était une fois de 1954 est une vibrante manifestation. Chacune de ces oeuvres s'inscrit, dans le parcours des artistes, comme une étape essentielle, un moment emblématique de leur recherche plastique, que ce soit chez Wols avec Sans titre (Le bateau ivre) de 1946- 947, qui tant par sa thématique que par le peu de toiles réalisées par le peintre constitue un tableau d'une qualité et d'une rareté exceptionnelle, ou bien l'icône pop incontournable des Flowers de Warhol de 1964. Cet ensemble international n'est, par ailleurs, pas en reste au regard de la scène espagnole avec Millares et l'étonnante Peinture No. LII de Tàpies dont la délicate composition horizontale aux tonalités d'ocres et de sables renvoie, par ces subtiles nuances, à certaines peintures de Morandi notamment. Aérien, le Mobile quadricolore réalisé en 1959 par Calder s'apparente à une respiration colorée qui survole cette collection et semble trouver, en écho, une résonnance dans les éclatants aplats de Liège d'Appel, peint en 1951. Trouvant sa cohérence par la formidable diversité de personnalités qui constitue ce groupe d'oeuvres, cette collection met en exergue un oeil qui a su réunir des pièces uniques par leur qualité, leur histoire et leur originalité, reflétant de la plus brillante manière toute la complexité et la profondeur de la scène artistique de l'après-guerre pour laquelle ni les frontières géographiques, ni les frontières esthétiques, ne furent des obstacles. This major collection from the West Coast of the United States comprises 17 leading artists who need no other introduction as their names speak for themselves: ALECHINSKY, APPEL, BOLTANSKI, CALDER, CESAR, CHARCHOUNE, DUBUFFET, FRANCIS, HANTAÏ, JORN, MILLARES, POLIAKOFF, RIOPELLE, TAPIES, TOBEY, WARHOL and WOLS. They are all testament to the creative breadth which flourished between Paris and New York in the 1950s and 1960s. These artists are actually all connected to Paris, having all spent more or less time there, finding the inspiration, relationships and support necessary for their recognition. Yet, with the exception of the CoBrA movement - which is particularly well represented here by Appel, Alechinsky and Jorn - none of the artists in this collection belonged to any real group, no aesthetic trend apart from one they created themselves. This 'Exhibition of Independents' therefore promotes the fantastic freedom and diversity running through these works. These artists put forward their own interpretation of art history, from Dubuffet, who, with Cafetière, Tasse et Sucrier from 1965, created his own version of still-life viewed through the eccentric prism of his Hourloupe series, reminiscent of a similar exercise undertaken by Picasso a few years earlier, to Riopelle's sensitive landscapes, as vividly exemplified in Il Était Une Fois from 1954. Each of these works represents an essential milestone in the artists' careers, an emblematic moment in their artistic research, from Wols, with Le Bateau Ivre from 1946-1947, whose theme and the fact that the painter produced so few works make it a painting of exceptional quality and rarity, to Warhols' unforgettable pop icon Flowers, from 1964. This international collection also takes in the Spanish art scene, with Millares and the astonishing Peinture No. LII by Tàpies, whose delicate horizontal composition with the subtle nuances of its ochre and sandy tones, is particularly reminiscent of certain paintings by Morandi. The ethereal Mobile Quadricolore, produced by Calder in 1959, resembles a colourful breath hovering over this collection and seems to find a corresponding resonance in the dazzling block of colour in Appel's Liège, painted in 1951. This collection, whose coherence lies in its amazing diversity of personalities, is tribute to an eye which was able to bring together pieces unique in terms of their quality, their history and their originality, a brilliant reflection of all the complexity and depth of the post-war art scene, for which neither geographical borders nor aesthetic frontiers proved an obstacle.
