A pair of sphinx 'press papier' are itemised in a bill dated 31 December 1805 from the Vulliamy workshops to Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood (1740-1820) at the cost of 10 guineas:
IDelivered two small bronze sphinxes with fore legs extended designed from the Antique fixed upon gilt plates and green marble plinths. 10 gs.'
The Sphinx models also relate to clock mounts supplied by the Vulliamy & Son workshops - an example of which, with almost identical bronze mounts, was sold Christie's London, 9 July 1998, lot 3.
