Lot Essay

Fishing Boats (Lot 229) can contrast the tone of this painting with Affandi's The Dragon Boat (Lot 234), where the boat's eyes almost suggest Affandi's defiance of fate, exemplary of Affandi's energetic artistic style of the time. Fishing Boats, painted almost a decade later on the other hand, depicts a serene, tranquil scene which is highly revelatory of the artist's thoughts and attitudes in his later days.

Crab and Lobster (Lot 233), painted in 1962, epitomizes the development of Affandi's artistic style in the 1960s and 1970s. During this time, he travelled extensively between Yogyakarta and Bali and spent long hours on the beach, capturing the different rhythms of life he found. It is during this time that he painted Crab and Lobster, an artistic representation of his seaside environment. Crabs and lobsters are also some of Affandi's favourite food. One can note the vivid depiction of the lobster's claws, coloured in fiery red, the crustacean almost suspended in mid-air. Indeed, this vivid evocation of the animals almost brings them to life, capturing perfectly the energy of their movements.

Fighting Roosters in Baskets (Lot 232) is a dense composition of Affandi's favourite painting subjects, roosters and the cockfight. He presents a serene depiction of the fighting cocks at rest in their individual baskets, in a period of calm before the ferocity and excitement of the cockfight begins.
