Lot Essay

"I depict the condition of humans who are often divided by complex, multilayered political, ethnic, racial, and religious systems: they co-exist yet their communication is limited and indirect. Figures are interconnected by intuitive as well as intellectual linkages, including ornamental vegetation, tongues, tails, intestines, animal skin patterns, fences and detailed landscapes."
- Entang Wiharso, 2011

Entang Wiharso's works interweave the narrative traditions of Java with his contemporary observations regarding social issues that resonate across national boundaries. One of the most remarkable aspects of Wiharso's works is related to storytelling, a device he uses time and again in his artistic praxis to communicate his thoughts and emotions in a manner that reflects the Indonesian identity.

This season, Christie's presents his wall-mounted relief I don't want to be a Hero - an evocative look at the pleasures and pitfalls of power, and its addictive lure. His works, influenced by Javanese myths and legends, reveal the world from his perspective - bringing to debate explorations of 'identity' and 'otherness' - representing his vision of present-day human relations and social imbalances through fantastic creatures. This combination of tradition as well as astute observations of the world we live in today is a testament to the artist's virtuosity, and the versatility of his vision and artistic practice.
