Lot Essay

According to the artists Lena Cobangbang and Mike Crisostomo, fictitious government agency The Weather Bureau is a social architecture and engineering conglomerate that designs environmental conditions in an idealized state of utopia. The Bureau builds from seemingly failed plans of defunct totalitarian states, to re-adapt and rehabilitates them in ideal settings, or rather in "nowhere lands" of timeless stasis.

Experiments in Degree Zero is part of a series of unique photographs. Composed of striking images which tackle the subject of weather condition and natural disasters, they are imagined aftermaths of uncanny, freak occurrences of nature. Like movie props or miniature sets for a film, the toy dioramas are made through a meticulous process, involving matchbox vehicles and food ingredients such as eggs, flour and gelatin. In attempting to simulate the perfect weather disaster the artists craft diminutive capsule universes which trespass on contemporary notions of utopia.
