The present four watches, each blessed with a 'one-of-kind' type of dial, display the most perfect combination of mechanical complexity, dial design, and exclusivity. Throughout literature and until today, no other set such as the present had ever been released to public until today and must be considered as the holy grail per se of all 5004 references. Most evident to the eyes of the beholder, this series of 5004 are fitted with four superb colored dials, each perfectly matching their respective case metals. The other desirable and unique feature on these dials, which differentiates them from the regular production of reference 5004, is the tachymetre scale, which is fully confirmed by the Certificate of Origin from Patek Philippe. To many collectors, reference 5004 is one of the greatest wristwatches ever made and is often mentioned as the watch with the most promising future on the market. Christie's is honored to have been chosen to offer this only known set of four reference 5004 for auction. Deriving from reference 3970 which is the true and legitimate successor to the mythical reference 2499, reference 5004 embodies not only the essence of Patek Philippe's design legacy of the post war decades but also the savoir faire of their skilled master watchmakers who managed to add another highly complex mechanism to a traditional sized watch without disturbing its proportions. Manufacture of reference 5004 was launched in 1995 and is today discontinued and replaced by reference 5204.
