The National Aviation Hall of Fame was founded in 1962 in Dayton, Ohio, the home of the Wright Brothers and the birthplace of aviation. It was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964 and is dedicated to preserving and memorializing the accomplishments of America's aerospace pioneers and leaders as well as inspiring future generations.
Cliff Robertson (1925-2011) was enshrined in the NAHF in 2006. He pursued a career in aviation and attempted to join the Naval Air Corps, but was instead sent to Maritime officers' school. With less than 20/20 vision, he was ineligible to fly in the United States. He began acting and writing and worked his way up to Broadway. He received an Emmy for his leading role in The Game and an Oscar for Best Actor in Charly. Later Mr. Robertson was selected to play President John F. Kennedy by the President himself in the movie PT-109. His more recent films include the Spiderman franchise, playing Ben Parker, the uncle of Peter Parker.
Robertson was an advocate for both general and military aviation and received many awards for the time and speeches he gave on behalf of aviation, including the 1987 EAA's highest honor Freedom of Flight award and the 2003 Veteran of the Year award by the American Veterans Association.
He was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2006 for his contributions to the field of aviation and for giving back to the aviation community and was presented with this Breitling watch.
Cliff Robertson passed away in New York on September 10, 2011, of natural causes, just a day after his 88th birthday.
