Lot Essay

The Madonna in Christian art is a depiction of the Virgin Mary and is often accompanied by the infant Christ. The theme of the Madonna and Child was rare in the first centuries of early Christian art. In 431, Mary was given the title of Theotokos Mother of God and to emphasize this concept the Madonna and Child were given a prominent place in church decoration and Christian art.

The spread of devotional images in Europe came during the Middle Ages, and it later became popular to depict the Madonna and Child surrounded by angels and saints.

The theme of the Madonna by herself began to decline after the 17th century, but representations of the Madonna and Child continued to be important, including in pop art of the 20th century.
