Lot Essay

Until the 1940's, Rolex oyster chronographs were typically in the traditional "calatrava" shape, with the most notable representatives of this family being the reference 3525 featuring 2 subsidiary dials and the reference 4048 with three subsidiary dials. In the second half of the 1940's, Rolex introduced a new version of the oyster case, more tonneau-shaped and in its principle case proportions very much the definitive shape as we still know it today. The chronograph family then introduced the reference 4537, which then evolved to the reference 5034 , and later the references 6034 and 6234.
The present reference 6034 is a particularly attractive and exceedingly rare example of this 20-year-long evolution. All of these Rolex oyster chronographs were predominantly cased in stainless steel, as one would expect for a sport watch, and examples cased in gold are exceedingly rare. The present chronograph is furthermore highlighted by a very attractive and rich dial, most notably featuring faceted applied gold hour markers, and completed with both a telemeter and outer tachometer scale. The ultimate blessing for this watch is its superb original and unmolested condition, not only retaining very impressive and sharp case proportions, but also very strong numbers in between the lugs.
Rolex chronographs where aesthetics, condition, and rarity meet at such high levels are must haves for any Rolex connoisseur's collection.

Different versions of reference 6034 are described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 230-251.
