Lot Essay

The Borghese Vase, which depicts a Bacchic procession, was first recorded with certainty in 1594 in the garden of Carlo Muti. It was certainly in the Villa Borghese by 1645 and in 1807 was purchased, along with the bulk of the Borghese collection of antiquities, by Napoleon Bonaparte and moved to France. It is now housed in the Daru gallery of the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
