40 Years Artists Space
Founded in 1972 in Downtown New York, Artists Space has for four decades successfully contributed to changing the institutional and economic landscape for contemporary art; lending support to emerging artists and emerging ideas alike.
Artists Space has been the site of provocative discussion within contemporary artistic debate, from the postmodern image (Douglas Crimp's, Pictures, 1977) to identity politics (Adrian Piper's, It's Just Art, 1981), to institutional critique (Michael Asher's, Untitled, 1988) to the AIDS Crisis (Nan Goldin's, Witnesses: Against our Vanishing, 1989). Artists Space has introduced a number of artists to a wider public, amongst them Joan Jonas, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Louise Lawler, Laurie Anderson, Barbara Bloom, John Baldessari, Jack Smith, Andrea Fraser, Haim Steinbach, Tim Rollins, Lari Pittman, Group Material, Barbara Kruger, Laurie Simmons, Anthony McCall, Fred Wilson, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Mike Kelley, Judith Barry, Michael Smith, Robert Longo, and Jenny Holzer.
Today, Artists Space works closely with artists to produce new works. Its program facilitates between local and global critical debates, creating a platform for artists that are underrepresented within the local context, such as Marc Camille Chaimowicz (Enough Tiranny Recalled, 2009), Duncan Campbell (Make it New John, 2010), Danh Vo (Autoerotic Asphyxiation, 2010), and Hilary Lloyd (Hilary Lloyd, 2011), and commissioning new works by US-based artists such as Dexter Sinister ("Identity", 2011), DUOX (DUOX4Larkin, 2012) and, most recently, the retrospective of Bernadette Corporation (2000 Wasted Years, 2012). In addition, Artists Space has staged exhibitions of historical work in relation to today's value systems, including Charlotte Posenenske (Charlotte Posenenske, 2010) and Christopher D'Arcangelo (Anarchism Without Adjectives (1975-1979), 2011).
In 2012, Artists Space for the first time in its history opened a second venue, alongside its 7000 sq ft exhibition venue in SoHo. Artists Space: Books & Talks in TriBeCa includes a bookstore and a dedicated venue for debate, including year-round programming of lectures, screenings, performances, and symposia, ranging from a lecture by Documenta 13's Artistic Director Carolyn Cristov-Bakargiev to presentations by the progressive community center Mexicali Rose, from the Mexican border city of Mexicali.
The Artists Space Program Fund
Unlike any other organization, Artists Space's name continues to be its mission: Artists Space--putting the needs of artists above all others. Hence, the most significant ongoing realm of support for Artists Space is that of artists who recognize most acutely the importance of Artists Space programs.
It is with this in mind that in this very rare instance, coinciding with its 40th Anniversary, Artists Space has turned to artists to support its newly established Artists Space Program Fund. The goal is to raise $2 million in order to be able to support its program with an additional $200,000 annually over the next 10 years; directly supporting artists' works, the production thereof, as well as artist's fees.
