Lot Essay

A graduate of the Clarence White School, where students were taught 'design, design, design,' Anton Bruehl learned the language of modernism and used it to accomplish 'a handsome stylishness' in his photographs.
This print, as well as the previous lot, are both complex proto-modernist arrangements of lines, mass, light and shadow, yet expertly printed on the expensive platinum paper so beloved by the Pictorialists.
