In 1953, Krishen Khanna and his family moved to Madras. Within a few years, through his daughter's involvement in Bharatanatyam, Khanna was introduced to Carnatic music. This is where his interest in Indian Classical music developed, amplified and cultivated through his interactions within the sphere of the musical elite in Madras. This reverberates throughout similar works at the time, resulting in a series of paintings that dealt with the subject matter of music and many were characterized by a 'rapid gestural experiment.
