Lot Essay

This group reflects Derek Jarman's longing to find both a new perspective in landscape as well as a new interior space during the 1960s and early 1970s. The invention of the solitary post, whose shadow can frequently give the sensation of the picture surface as a clock-face, also seen in many of his landscapes at this time, introduces to a bare pencil drawing the element of a strong light source pervading the image.

We are grateful to Mr. Richard Salmon for the information he has kindly provided for the catalogue.
