Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present steel watch in 1956 and its subsequent sale on 4 December 1957.
The present watch is an original and rare example of time only reference 2508. Fresh to the market, it is preserved in excellent overall condition with crisp outlines. This is only the 13th example in stainless steel to have appeared at auction to date. Reference 2508 with sweep centre seconds was launched in 1951 and stayed in production until at least 1960.

The large Calatrava model was mostly produced in yellow gold, a small percentage in pink gold and only a few in stainless steel. A desirable and classic watch of understated simplicity, reference 2508 is cherished for its masculine and sporty look.

The model is described and illustrated in Patek Philippe Steel Watches by John Goldberger, pp. 196-197 and in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, 2nd edition, p. 204, pl. 328.
