Lot Essay

The present watch is a highly attractive example of a Ref. 6034 with a very nice later added Rolex service dial dating from the mid-1960s, featuring a strong red telemetre scale graduated for miles and a very unusual blue tachymetre scale for miles per hour. Unlike many other tachymetre scales, the scale of this watch is marked with the unusual sequence of 60, 64, 68, 72, 74, 77 instead of the more usual sequence in increments of 5. The special nature of the dial is heightened by its luminous dots positioned just on top of the blue tachymetre scale at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, additionally to the luminous accents already found on the raised dagger numerals.

Reference 6034 was introduced to the market in the early 1950s. The majority of the reference was cased in stainless steel or in 18K gold, a small series in 14K gold.

Different versions of the model are described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pages 230 to 251, as well as in 100 Years of Rolex by Franca and Guido Mondani, pp. 54 and 79.
