Lot Essay

The present work is a preliminary study for Edward Hopper's etching Summer Twilight, executed in 1920, and was a gift from the artist to his print dealer, Ned Jennings. In 1925, Jennings was instrumental in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's acquisition of fifteen of the artist's etchings.
