"The interesting thing about a polished surface to me is that when it is really perfect enough something happens - it literally ceases to be physical; it levitates; it does something else what happens especially with concave surfaces" (A. Kapoor, quoted in Anish Kapoor, exh. cat., Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston 2008, p. 53).
The product of Anish Kapoor's career long fascination with manipulations of light, Untitled is a concave shape, an iconic piece that is instantly recognizable. The outside is painted white, which is sharply contrasted by a vibrant blue interior. Kapoor roots himself in the tradition of Minimalist sculpture set by the likes of Constantin Brancusi and Donald Judd. In fact, the undulating qualities of Kapoor's Untitled are also characteristic of Brancusi's The New Born. Kapoor's Untitled is a streamlined piece that belies deep significancethe interior surface pulls in the viewer into an alternate reality. With Untitled, Kapoor reveals a complete parallel universe where new perceptions are discovered.
Kapoor's ultimate aim for his sculptures is to transcend mere existence to the status of non-object. Kapoor is well known for his large scale sculptures, such as those included in the exhibition "Turning the World Upside Down" in Kensington Gardens, London in 2010-2011, as well as his Cloud Gate, a permanent display in Millennium Park, Chicago. Kapoor accomplishes incredible illusionary feats with these massive structures, making them disappear completely at times. In his more recent smaller scale works, such as Untitled, Kapoor explores an interest in pure, unadulterated, uninterrupted color.
Untitled wields an incredible power of visual persuasion. Its surface coaxes the viewer to peer into its depth and step towards its presence. Created following years of meditation and calculations, Untitled is an invitation by Kapoor extended to the viewer to experiment as he did. Untitled is a piece that offers its viewer a glance into the mind of the celebrated artist.
