Lot Essay

Srihadi often creates works that portray Nature in its unbound expressive form. Many believe that the childhood memory of the landscape in his hometown is affixed in his memory and that drives him to paint. The beach, as locale, has its own lure for Srihadi as it represents the unification of the elements of land, water and sky in Nature. Srihadi finds an undeniable harmony in this unification. In Bali Beach (Seascape in Bali) (Lot 3392) and Sanur Beach, with Afternoon Sun (Lot 3394), Srihadi articulates his interest in the beach as pictorial subject. The cool palette of blue and mustard yellow in both paintings exudes tranquillity and stillness. The unblended brushstrokes and accumulated pigments does not portray unnecessary drama but instead it depicts layers of contemplation; a poetry without words, a beauty that transcends one's comprehension.
