The 'Snowball' model, the first time the contour of a plant determined the actual shape of the shade, represented a new artistic direction for Tiffany's workshop. Here, the curvature of the shade coincides with the contour of the blossoming hydrangea. In comparison to shades with a confining surface, such as the more traditional cone design, the Snowball's softly scalloped edges and irregular border enhance its gently flowing form. Despite its superb artistry, the model was discontinued by 1910, therefore few examples were produced.
