'Depicting a scene in the region of Laghouat, this second version of the Jeu de la Poudre (The Powder Game) was kept for a long time by the artist before he offered it to his friend Masson. It is customary in the Algerian countryside to set off gunpowder to accompany musicians during a wedding or other local festivity. An unusual sight to the uninitiated, the scene also gave the artist the chance to capture the turbulent movements of the crowd, translating into paint a frenzied ballet accompanied by the loud ullulation of the women.'
