Lot Essay

The only known example of a dated work from Hackert's sojourn in Naples in 1774, at which time he witnessed the eruption of Vesuvius that he later represented in his picture Vesuvausbruch 1774 (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel; C. Nordhoff and H. Reiner, Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807: Verzeichnis seiner Werke, Berlin, 1994, no. 80, fig. 32). It is very close both in technique and composition to a view of Vietri in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Nordhoff and Reiner, op. cit., no. 620, fig. 285).

We are grateful to Dr Claudia Nordhoff, who has confirmed the attribution of the drawing on the basis of a photograph, and for her assistance in preparing this catalogue note.
