Lot Essay

Paul Sandby formed a large and varied collection of drawings, paintings and prints by Old Masters, as well as contemporaries. Sandby frequently employed bodycolour in his work, especially later in his career and in this he must have been influenced by the work of Joseph Goupy (1689-1769) and Marco Ricci (176-1730) for both the medium and the subject matter. Sandby formed one of the largest collections of Ricci's work in the country.
