Lot Essay

George Barrett established himself as a landscape painter in his native Ireland prior to his move to London in 1763. He was one of the earliest artists to be inspired by the sublime in landscape, due to his early friendship with Edmund Burke. Burke clearly discussed his ideas with Barrett and also encouraged his friend to paint directly from nature.
