Lot Essay

Born and trained in Amsterdam, Hendriks spent much of his life in Haarlem, where he served terms as director and curator of the Haarlemse Tekenacademie. He then became curator of the Teylers Museum in 1785 and was responsible for the purchase in 1790 of 1700 Italian drawings from the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden. The meticulously detailed present drawing is related to a finished painting of a Hunting Still Life at the Teylers Museum, Haarlem, dated 1815, which is very close in composition.
