William Wyld spent his entire working life in France. In 1833 he spent six months in Algiers and on his return published a series of lithographs 'Voyage Pittoresque dans la Régence d'Alger pendant l'Année 1833'. Isabey had visited in 1830 and Delacroix had spent time in Morocco and Algeria in 1832. There is a related pen and ink drawing of an Algerian figure sitting cross-legged in a doorway of his shop, in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester.
