Lot Essay

In 1956 Chadwick was awarded the International Prize for Sculpture at the XXVIII Venice Biennale. Other awards followed globally and in 1964 he was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire. By the 1970s his international reputation was assured allowing him to explore in detail some of his earlier ideas. Cloaked Couple I is part of a group of cloaked figures that develop from the Winged Figure series he created in the 1960s. Chadwick further used the cloaks to add a sense of movement and dynamism to the figures. The couple, though separated, stride forward, side by side, with confidence and purposes of direction whilst unified by the fabric that flows and swirls behind them. In 1977 this culminated in Pair of Walking Figures - Jubilee 1977, a monumental work where the drapery billows out behind the figures. Chadwick continued to explore the use of drapery and wind repeatedly until he retired.

Cloaked Couple I was cast in an edition of eight of which one cast is in the collection of The Arts Council, England.
