Lot Essay

Richard Boyle was the eldest son of Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon (d. 1764), speaker of the Irish House of Commons, and his second wife, Henrietta (d. 1746), daughter of Charles Boyle, 2nd Earl of Burlington. Like his father, Richard Boyle held several high political offices and was a Privy Councilor. He married Catherine Ponsonby in 1763 and succeeded his father the following year. He was created Baron Carleton in the British peerage on 21 August 1786. Sittings are recorded for this portrait in 1759.
