Lot Essay

William Page became an accomplished drawing master having attended the R.A. Schools in 1812 and 1813. Mostly known for his landscape and architectural watercolours, it is thought that he visited Greece and Turkey in 1818, helping to date this work to around that time.

Phigalia was an Ancient Greek city in the southeastern province of Greece which is now called Elis.
