Born Gallipolis, Ohio, 1950. Studied at: Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, 1968-70; the University of Chicago, 1970-71, and Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, 1972. Exhibitions include: Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York, 1994; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, 2001; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 2008; Retrospective, Skarstedt Gallery, New York, 2011. Selected public collections include: Tate Collection, London, England; Museum of Modern Art, New York. Winner of several awards including: the Golden Lion, 44th Venice Biennale, 1997; Berlin Prize Fellowship; The American Academy, Berlin, 2000; and Urban Visionaries Award, The Cooper Union, New York, 2006. She lives in New York.
